Library Relief Sculpture, SEEDS

In the Artist's Words

SEEDS

"My design intent in this relief sculpture is to evoke my culture fragments such as the Rosetta stone, Calendar stones or rune stones.  In order to do this, I have used a contemplative face image amid the five major scripts used to record most western thought: Phoenician, Greek, Roman, Medieval and Modern English.  These symbols have been arranged to suggest expansion, growth, change and a sense of vitality.

This relief sculpture is a circular concave form, four feet, three inches in diameter.  My plan is to cast it in aluminum and gold-leaf the surface.

When I submitted the proposal for the work, I had no particular location for placement in mind.  At this point, I feel the stairway of the library might be suitable since the gold surface would make a handsome effect against the cool gray marble of the wall.  The subject seems especially appropriate for the location."
