Finding Additional Information

Review the information you have already found and decide what additional information is needed. Answer these questions.

  • What specific information do you need?

  • What source type (e.g. book) is most likely to contain the information?

  • What strategy should you use to identify the information source?

EXAMPLE:

  • Information needed: history of polio vaccine

  • Source type: probably a book

  • Strategy: Felix G. Cat Online Catalog was already searched, so try other databases such as Athena and Books in Print

EXAMPLE:

  • Information needed: last week’s comet discovery

  • Source type: probably a popular news magazine

  • Strategy: InfoTrac was already searched, so try searching latest news magazine issues

EXAMPLE:

  • Information needed: latest weather forecast

  • Source type: probably the Web

  • Strategy: use Yahoo (Web directory) or a search engine to pinpoint a specific Web page covering weather forecasts

Be sure to ask for assistance at the Information Desk. The librarians who work this desk have years of experience in helping students to formulate strategies for finding information.
