Citing Sources in ACS Format

 
 

Include all author names in a reference citation. With multiple authors, separate the names from one another by semicolons. List the names in inverted form: last name first, then first initial or name, middle initial or name, and qualifiers (Jr., II).

Periodicals Format for Scientific Journals

The journal name is abbreviated according to the Chemical Abstracts Service Source Index (CASSI) and italicized. [To see a list of the CASSI abbreviation of the "1000+ Journals Most Commonly Cited", see The ACS Style Guide…, 2nd ed, pages 215-229 as noted at bottom of this guide].

Author 1; Author 2; Author 3; etc. Title of Article. Journal Abbreviation Year, Volume, Page Numbers.

Example

Klingenberg, B.; Vannice, M. A. Influence of Pretreatment on Lanthanum Nitrate, Carbonate, and Oxide Powders. Chem. Mater. 1996, 2755-2768.

Format for Nonscientific Journals (those not abstracted by CASSI)

Author 1; Author 2; Author 3; etc. Title of Article. Title of Periodical, Complete Date, pp Page Numbers.

Byrne, John A. The Best & Worst Boards. Business Week, Nov 25, 1996, pp 82-98.

Formats for Articles From a Full-text Database

Author 1; Author 2; Author 3; etc. Title of Article. Journal Abbreviation [Name of Database (accessed <date>)] Year, Volume, Page Numbers.

Author 1; Author 2; Author 3; etc. Title of Article. Title of Periodical [Name of Database (accessed <date>)] , Complete Date, pp Page Numbers.

Pal, Y.; Wong, T. F.; Gilkes, R. J. The Forms of Potassium and Potassium Adsorption in some Virgin Soils from South-western Australia. Aust. J. Soil Res. [InfoTrac OneFile (accessed 21 Sept 2001)] 1999, 37, 695-696.

Books Format for Books without Editors

Author 1; Author 2; Author 3; etc. Chapter Title (if any). In Book Title, Edition Number; Series Information (if any); Publisher: Place of Publication, Year; Volume Number, pp Page Numbers.

Internet Sources Format

Author (if any). Title of Site. URL (accessed <date>), other identifying information.
