How to Search General Reference Center

To search for a subject:

Click in the search box, type in a word or phrase describing your subject. You can limit your search in various ways by using the boxes located below the search box. Click the Search button.

To display results:

When your search succeeds, a list of relevant subjects or citations appears. To view the records associated with your subject, click View  (some subjects may also have a Narrow by subdivision or See also related subjects button). The matching records appear in the citation format - title, author(s) and where the article is published. Many of them will have abstracts or full text (i.e. the whole article). You can see the abstract or the full text of a record by clicking the link to Abstract or Text. To return to the list of citations, click Citations in the left column.

Library holdings:

Library holdings link means that Woodward Library owns some volumes of that publication (not necessarily the volume that includes the article). To see which volumes Woodward Library owns, click  Library holdings. Most of the items listed in the databases that are owned by Woodward Library are located on Level 1.

To Mark Items and Print:

Mark items that you want by clicking the Mark box to the left of the citation. When ready to print the marked items click View mark list in the left column. Click Print or E-mail in the left column, then choose Reformat under Browser Print. Once the list has been reformatted choose Print from the gray print box that pops up.

To Mark Items and Download:

Click Print or E-mail in the left column, then choose Reformat under Browser Print. Then insert a 3 1/2" disk in the computer's A: drive. Choose Save As from the File menu, change the Save In: to 3 1/2" floppy (A:) and change the Save as type: to text (*.txt). Type a name for your file in File Name. Click Save.

To E-mail:

Mark the items you want by clicking the Mark box to the left of the citation. When ready to e-mail the marked items click View mark list in the left column. Click Print or E-mail in the left column, and type your full e-mail address in the E-mail Delivery box at the bottom of the screen. Click Submit Request

To perform another search or to go back:

To return to the search screen, click Search in the left column. To return to the list of citations, click Citations in the left column.

Advanced Search:

Advanced Search allows you to restrict your search to one or more fields. To access, click Advanced Search in the left column. Your previous search results will carry over into Advanced Search. You may use them to construct a new search without re-keying.

Example: You have already done a search on acid rain. Access Advanced Search and your search will display as R1 su "acid rain"

You can type R1 in the search box and combine it with other words or phrases to refine your search: R1 AND New York. Then click the Search button.

To exit:
