Encyclopedia Britannica Online
contains more than 73,000 articles and provides access to the complete encyclopedia,  Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary and Thesaurus, Britannica Student Encyclopedia and the Britannica Book of the Year.  Additionally, Encyclopedia Britannica Online has an Internet directory that includes more than 300,000 links to Web sites selected that are  rated and reviewed by Britannica editors.

Search Tips

  • Spelling:  Encyclopedia Britannica is British in origin and uses the British spelling of many words.  You may get better search results using the British spelling of a word.  Check the list of British equivalents (use the Search Tips link) to see if there is a British spelling of your term.

  • Case:  You may use either upper or lower case when entering a search term or phrase in the Search Box.

  • Abbreviations: Encyclopedia Britannica uses many abbreviations in its articles.  You may get better search results if you check  the  abbreviation list (use the Search Tips link).

  • Natural Language:  You may phrase your search in the form of a question, if you like.  Only the key words will be searched.  For example:  What is the capital of Norway? will be searched as capital AND Norway.

Features

The Workspace feature allows you to create a special page for your research project where you can store articles you have found in Encyclopedia Britannica.  You may retrieve or delete articles at any time.  To add an article to you Workspace simply click the save icon on the search results page. Click on the Workspace link on the toolbar at the top of the screen to view your Workspace.

You also have access to  the Merriam-Webster College Dictionary and Thesaurus while searching Encyclopedia Britannica.
