Health & Wellness lists citations and summaries of most articles and entire text of some articles in journals, magazines, newspapers, pamphlets, and reference books.  Publications included are:

  • health/medical journals
  • health care general interest publications
  • topical overviews from Clinical Reference Systems
  • PDR Family Guides
  • Gale encyclopedias
  • other reference sources

Health & Wellness covers magazines, journals & newsletters published 1980 to present; newspapers published 1998 to present; pamphlets published in the current year + 2 years backfile; and current editions of the reference books & topical overviews.

How to Search Health & Wellness

Home Home The home page features the Search box, which lets you perform a basic search of the materials in this database using one of the three search options: by Keyword, Subject or Entire Document. Also on the home page you can easily begin browsing and searching directly in a specific content area, such as Diseases and Conditions, Breaking News or search the Directory, to name a few.
Diseases and Conditions Diseases & Conditions Allows you to browse the Gale Encyclopedia of Medicine, an authoritative, comprehensive, in-depth medical guide which provides information on medical topics in language accessible to adult laypersons. Disease/disorder articles typically cover definition; description; causes and symptoms; diagnosis; treatments; prevention; and more. Test/treatment articles typically cover definition; purposes; precautions; preparation; risks; normal and abnormal results; and much more.
Alternative Medicine Alternative Medicine Users subscribing to the Alternative Health Module are able to browse the Gale Encyclopedia of Alternative Health for diseases and medical conditions. The Alternative Health Module provides additional information on alternative topics such as, herbal remedies, yoga, homeopathy, midwifery, chiropractic and more. This module is available as a separate subscription and complements the content found in Health & Wellness Resource Center.
Drugs and Herbal Remedies Drugs & Herbal Remedies Searches the following reference sources for a drug/herb or for a symptom: PDR Family Guide to Prescription Drugs, PDR Family Guide to Over-the-Counter Drugs, USP DI-Volume II, Advice for the Patient: Drug Information in Lay Language and, for Alternative Health Module subscribers, the PDR Family Guide to Natural Medicines and Healing Therapies, PDR for Nutritional Supplements and PDR for Herbal Medicines.
Directory Directory Searches the Gale Medical and Health Information Directory for agencies, organizations and schools; journals, newsletters, publishers and Web sites; and hospitals and health care facilities, programs, and special care. You may limit your search by city and/or state/province.
Dictionary Dictionary Allows you to search for terms in Mosby's Medical, Nursing, & Allied Health Dictionary.
Trusted Sites Trusted Sites Allows you to link to CancerNet, Centers for Disease Control, Healthfinder, Medem library, MEDLINEPlus (English and Spanish), National Institutes of Health, National Women's Health Information Center, and PubMed Websites. In addition, there is access to sites under the categories of: Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology; Anatomy; Arthritis; Cancer; Cardiac; Clinical Trials; Deafness and Communication Disorders; Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Disorders; Disease Prevention and Wellness; Evidence Based Medicine, Eyes; Government Databases; Hemophilia; Key Library Databases; Mental Health; Neurological Disorders and Stroke; Obesity; Pediatrics; Senior Health; and Women’s Health.
Health Assessment Health Assessment These are all personalized to a patient's individual situation. These allow you to link to: A Cancer Profiler that informs patients about treatment options, side effects, questions to ask their physician, and likely outcomes. Other calculators range from a Body Mass Indexer, Depression, Fat intake, and GFR calculators which assist to determine kidney function for adults and children. In addition, there are Risk Assessment Tools that help consumers find out their risk for cancer, diabetes, heart disease, osteoporosis, stroke and personalized tips for prevention. You may also estimate your 10-year risk of having a heart attack with a tool which uses information from the Framingham Heart Study to predict a person’s chance of having a heart attack in the next 10 years. There is also an interactive tool to measure a woman’s risk of invasive breast cancer. And finally another interactive tool to measure your risk of developing diabetes.
Disease Profiler Disease Profiler Allows you to access health care related statistics located in the Disease Profiler databases: Commercial Claims and Encounters and the Medicare Supplemental Coordination of Benefits.
Advanced Search Advanced Search Allows you to create a more targeted search to specific fields of information (known as indexes) and provides an easy way to make use of logical search operators (AND, OR, NOT). You may limit your search to full-text articles, consumer health, refereed publications, and the Alternative Health Module (for users subscribing to this module).
