The Alternative Press Index is a subject index to  alternative, radical, and left periodicals, newspapers and magazines.

The Alternative Press Index (API) was born with the New Left of the 1960's. It was launched in 1969 to provide access to the practices and theories of radical social change. The Index is international and interdisciplinary, spanning the social sciences and humanities. 

Subjects Covered: anarchism, indigenous peoples, democracy, labor, ecology, national liberation, feminism, socialism - theory and practice, gay and lesbian issues  

Dates Covered: 1991 to present.  For coverage from 1969 to 1990 see Alternative Press Index Archive.
