USB
Flashdrive/Thumbdrive problems
-
Most USB/Flash
drive drivers are current as of August 17, 2005
-
If you have a
"Secure" partition on your USB/Flash drive, you may require an
administrative account on the workstations.
-
The library does
not provide administrative accounts on InfoCommons or LICR
workstations
-
To access data on
secured drives, please use the machine you used to enable the
secure partition to:
1.) Copy off all your data (including the USB drivers folder)
2.) Remove the secure partition
3.) Copy your data back onto the drive
-
If you are
prompted for a password to install drivers, please
contact the Information Desk
Asian/Alternate
Character sets
-
If you are
prompted to install alternate character sets please be aware
that InfoCommons machines IS01 through IS08 and all LICR
machines already have Alternate character sets installed
-
Alternatively, if
none of these machines are available, please
contact the
Information Desk
Health
& Human Performace Textbook CD problems
-
HHP students have
a CD in their textbook which requires software installation on a
machine before it is usable.
-
The regular public user accounts
do not have enough access permissions to install software on the machines (for
generally better stability)
-
The HHP lab in the Dunn Center is the only
lab which has this software installed; please use the Dunn lab for this CD

Online
Music class sound file problems
-
Music classes
have sound files that require recent versions of
Real Player
-
Real Networks,
the maker of Real Player, sometimes require updates to older
versions of Real Player; the Systems Department generally is not
notified of these updates by Real.
-
Congratulations,
you have likely been caught by one of these surprise updates
-
The regular
public user accounts do not have enough access permissions to
install software on the machines (for generally better
stability)
-
The Systems Department is working
to update all public workstations;
Currently, InfoStations 00-08a and LICR Workstations 01-09 (the first two rows
of each area) have the newest RealPlayer (v10) installed
-
Library Systems staff will be
around to update the remaining machines when they are not being used by students
working on academic projects
Math
Computer-Based Training
-
Math courses have
a website
http://www.coursecompass.com
-
This course
includes streaming video clips which sometimes hang, causing the
workstation to stop responding.
(When the workstation hangs for more than ~30 seconds the only
solution is Restarting the workstation)
-
There is no
workaround, OIT is monitoring this problem and identifies it as
a bandwidth issue (which is beyond library control)
Physio
Physics CD-ROM problems
-
Physio CD-ROM
tries to install program and fails or hangs or asks for
administrator password
-
To access the
contents of the Physio CD-ROM, use the following steps:
Printing
PowerPoint problem
-
InfoCommons and
LICR Workstations default to Double sided or "Duplex" printing
-
To change from
Duplex to Single Sided printing use the following steps with the
document open:
-
Click "File"
on the toolbar
-
Click "Print"
on File menu
-
Click the "Properties"
button
-
Click "None"
in the "Duplex options" area
-
Click
OK (to accept Duplex None setting)
-
Click
OK (to submit print job)
-
Wait for the
rename print job popup
-
Change print job
name
-
Submit print job
as usual
-
Disabling Duplex
printing will last throughout the current application session;
once the program is closed the default (Duplexed) printing
behavior will resume on next use
Printing
from Blackboard / WebCT
-
Printing directly
from Blackboard causes strange problems
-
For successful
printing from Blackboard / Web CT, save the document to the
desktop, open with regular program for that type of file, and
print from there
-
To do this,
follow these steps:
-
Print files with
desired options (Reboot workstation when through to clear
desktop)
Printing
files with Mathematical Equations
-
Printing files
with Mathematical Equations sometimes fail
-
For successful
printing, follow these steps:
-
Click
the Adobe printer icon as usual
-
Click the "Advanced"
button at the bottom left corner
-
Check the "Print
as image" checkbox
-
Click "OK"
-
Click "OK"
-
The print job
should print this time
-
When there is an
"Access Violation error" this means a second instance of the
Popup Client tried to start, but couldn’t (and it shouldn’t)
-
If a 'Rename the
print job pop up window' does not appear after ten seconds or
so, please do the following:
-
Check the
tasktray (bottom right corner of screen) for the presence of
a strange grey rabbit head icon
If the icon is there, minimize
the topmost open window, one at a time, sometimes the popup
is hiding behind the top window
If the icon is not there,
click Start -->Programs-->VendPrint-->VendPrint PopUp Client
Then resubmit your print job
-
Next steps
(if needed)
* Check the printer queue (Start --> Printers --> Name of
Printer) for print jobs from [workstation name]
* If the print job is listed on the printer queue, check the
Release Station list
* If the print job is listed on the Release Station, try to
release the job (should get a popup on the Release Station
that says popup has not been responded to on the
workstation)
* Check workstation for popup (usually these steps cause the
pop up to appear)
* If there is still no popup, Reboot the Release Station
-
VendPrint,
generally, just works. When it doesn't, and these steps do not
fix the problem, please
contact the
Information Desk
