Grove Music (the definitive music encyclopedia) made up of over 29,000
articles drawing on the expertise of over 6,000 international
contributors.
It contains the information found in both the
print New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians,
second edition, (2001, 30 volumes), the print
New Grove
Dictionary of Opera, 1992 and the
New Grove
Dictionary of Jazz, 2002.
Oxford Music Online will be updated regularly.

How to Search
Oxford Music Online
To Search: type your term or musician's name in the search box that appears at the
top left-hand side of each page within
Oxford Music Online
To find musicians by date, genre, or nationality, use the
"Explore Biographies" link.
To search for information on a particular work, use Full Text
search under Advanced Search.
To Find Musical Examples: The musical examples in
Oxford Music Online
are currently limited to those demonstrating a technical aspect of music
such as a cadence or double fugue. Recordings of entire pieces are
not available at this time.
To Browse: You can also browse by article heading or index
entry by clicking those links on the Grove Music home page.
To use the Advanced search in
Oxford Music Online, you need to understand its search modes,
which include concept, pattern and Boolean. The
- concept mode (default) matches any words that are synonymous or
related in meaning or form;
- pattern mode looks for words similar in spelling to those
entered; and
- Boolean mode allows you to refine your search by using the
Boolean operators AND, OR, NOT.
Review the HELP section on Search Results in order to understand
how you can use the search modes to better refine your searches.
