HighWire, supported by Stanford University, provides free access to
many science, technology, and medical journals. The Library does
not subscribe to any of the non-free articles; however, subscriptions
and pay-per-view access are available to individuals.
HighWire can be accessed from anywhere on or off campus.
How To Search HighWire
1. To Search for a Subject
Quick Search: Type your topic word(s) in the
Keyword(s):
box and click Go. To increase your odds of finding online
full-text, select In HighWire hosted journals.
Advanced Search: Click
Advanced, then type your topic
words in the Title, Abstract|Title,
or Full
Text|Abstract|Title boxes. Choose to search for
any of
your words, all of your words, or your words as a
phrase.
2. To Display Results
HighWire displays the journals cover, citation, portion of the text
where the search term(s) appear, and the viewing options. You may
sort chronologically by clicking newest first.
To narrow your search, use the
Instant Index listing to
focus your search in one area. Or, re-do your search using one or
more of the topics to the right of the citations (use the bottom scroll
bar to view)
3. Article Viewing Options
The articles are available free online when the words "This
Article is FREE" appear under the journal cover.
Click "Full Text" or "PDF" (to the right of
the citation) to access.
"Abstract" will display a summary of the article.
"Journal Home" will display information about the journal
title and sometimes options for ordering articles.
"Citation Map" displays information on the article's
references.
Articles with a price listed under the journal cover or that don't
say "Full Text" or "PDF" are not available for free
in this database. To get this article free through the Library,
see Accessing Articles from Periodicals or Requesting
Items from Other Libraries.
4. To Print
After viewing an article, click the browser's Print button, or the
Acrobat Print button if viewing a PDF file.
To print a list of citations:
Check the box next to the desired citations. At the top or bottom
of the screen click the For checked items
button and print that
page. You must do this for each page -- the checked items
will not carry over to the next page of results. You may set the
number of citations displayed on each page (up to 80) at the top of the
screen.
