PubMed
is the public access gateway to MEDLINE, the National Library of Medicine's premier bibliographic database covering the fields of medicine, nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, the health care system, and the preclinical sciences. MEDLINE contains bibliographic citations and author abstracts from approximately 3,900 current biomedical journals published in the United States and 70 foreign countries. The file contains approximately 9 million records dating back to 1966. Coverage is worldwide, but most records are from English-language sources or have English abstracts.

You may access PubMed from anywhere.

How to Search PubMed

To find out if the Library has full-text for the source identified click this icon: Search for full-text at APSU This option is available from the abstract view of each citation, but not from the citation display.  If no full-text is available, you may use the "Article not available? Request it from another library (ILL)" link at the bottom of the results screen to populate the ILL request from with citation information.  In addition, see How to Access Periodicals for other options.

1.  TO SEARCH

Enter search terms in the query box. The features bar directly beneath the query box provides access to additional search options. You may enter one or more search terms in the query box and press the enter key or click <Go>. You may want to use the MeSH Browser to identify specific subject search terms. Once you click <Go>, PubMed will display your search results.

2.  TO MODIFY YOUR SEARCH

Use AND to narrow your search and OR to expand your search.

              Example:  nurse midwives AND employment
              Example:  rural hospital OR rural health center

Use AND and OR to combine sets you have already created.

             Example:   #3 AND therapy
             Example:   #1 OR #2

Use truncation * to search for all forms of a root word.

             Example: bacter* retrieves bacteria, bacterium, bacteriophage

You may use the Limits feature to limit your search by date, language, publication types, and others. If you applied Limits, the check box next to Limits will be marked and a listing of your limit selections will be displayed. To turn off the existing limits, click on the check box to remove the check before running your next search.

To search by an author's name enter the name in the format of last name plus initials (no punctuation).

            Example: smith ja

3.  TO DISPLAY AND MARK RESULTS

PubMed retrieves search results and displays the citations in batches of 20 per page.

To mark a record to save or print, check the box next to the citation number of the displayed record. After you have checked the records you want to print or save, put them in PubMed's Clipboard by clicking the <Add to Clipboard> button. The Clipboard can hold up to 500 items.

4.  TO PRINT OR SAVE YOUR SEARCH RESULTS

To print or save selected items from PubMed's Clipboard: Click in the box next to each citation you want and then click on <Add to Clipboard>. When you are ready to print or save your records, click on the <Clipboard> link to go there. Within the Clipboard, display the citations in the format you want to print or save. Use your browser's print function to print the page or the <Save> button to save your records to a disk.

5.  TO EXIT

Use the <Home> button in your Internet browser to exit PubMed.
