RefWorks is bibliographic management software that allows you to
import references from online databases, organize your references into
folders according to your topics of interest or various assignments,
insert references from a variety of formats (MLA and APA) into the body
of a research paper, and generate formatted references pages. RefWorks
is free for all members of APSU and available from any computer with
internet access.
You are required to sign up for an Individual account from RefWorks to use this resource. APSU users are
also required to use
his or her official APSU e-mail address ending with "@apsu.edu"
when signing up for a new account.
To
use RefWorks from a non-APSU networked computer
(home, off-campus office, other internet connection)
you will need the group code.
to view the code and log-in instructions. Please note that the
Group Code may change each semester.
Notice: Internet
Explorer 7 users may experience extreme slowness when using
RefWorks. This is due to IE's new Phishing Filter that
evaluates website content. Microsoft has a downloadable
patch for this problem:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/928089. A
second option is to manually turn off the phishing filter under
the tools section of IE.
How to import references into RefWorks from other library databases:
Citations for sources you find in many library databases can be
exported into RefWorks. Databases that are compatible with
RefWorks can be divided into three categories:
- Databases from which you can export references into RefWorks
directly
- Databases that require an import filter after references
have been saved in a text file
- Databases searchable from within RefWorks
See the List of compatible APSU databases
for instructions on how to export citations to RefWorks from each
database category.
References from databases not compatible with RefWorks can be
entered manually into RefWorks.
Creating Bibliographies
You can easily create stand-alone bibliographies from the citations
in your RefWorks database in just a few short steps:
- Click the "Bibliography" button in the navigation bar
- Choose the "Output style" you wish to use from the drop down
list
- Select "Format a Bibliography from a List of References"
- Choose the file type you'd like to create (HTML, Word, etc.)
- Choose which references to include (Either "All", those stored
to "My List", or the citations from a particular folder in your
database)
- Click the "Create Bibliography" button at the bottom of the page
- The formatted bibliography should appear in a few seconds
- Proofread the bibliography for any errors
Formatting Papers
You can use RefWorks to format your in-text citations and create a
works cited/bibliography at the end of your research papers. There are
three different methods for creating in-text references to the citations
stored in your RefWorks database. Click on the links below to learn more
about each method:
MS Word 2007 users:
Write-N-Cite will work with the 2007 version of MS Word
but only if your document is
saved as a Word 97-2003.doc file. The new version of Write-N-Cite
currently under development will be compatible with Word 2007.
Note: When using Write-n-Cite, RefWorks is able to handle up to
25MB. If your manuscript approaches this size, you may need to
remove images and tables, format the manuscript from within your
RefWorks account, then reinsert the images and tables in Final
document.
Once you have the references to the citations in your RefWorks
database in the text of your paper, follow the steps below to format the
in-text citations and the bibliography for your paper:
- Click the "Bibliography" button in the RefWorks toolbar
- Choose the "Output style" you wish to use from the drop down
list
- Select "Format Paper and Bibliography"
- Click the "Browse" button to find your saved paper, then click
"Open"
- Click the "Create Bibliography" button at the bottom of the page
- The formatted paper and bibliography should appear in a few
seconds
- Proofread the in-text citations and bibliography for any errors
