RefWorks Compatible Library Databases with Export Instructions

Databases that are compatible with RefWorks can be divided into three categories:

  Import Filter Required Databases that require an import filter
  Direct Export Option Databases from which you can export references into RefWorks directly
  Searchable Within RefWorks Databases searchable from within RefWorks

Note: It may be necessary to disable any active pop-up blockers before exporting references directly into RefWorks.

Database Type Export Instructions
Academic OneFile Direct Export Option
  1. Conduct your search and mark the records you want to import.
  2. Click on "Marked Items.
  3. Click on "Citation Tools" within the red "Tools" box. A new window will pop up.
  4. Select Export to third party software: Refworks.
  5. Click on "Export". RefWorks will open in a new window.
    Note: if you are using FireFox for your Web browser, you may need to turn off the FireFox pop-up blocker. Go to: Tools / Options / Content / Make sure "block pop-up windows" is not selected.
  6. Log in to RefWorks
  7. Your records should appear in the Last Imported Folder.

You may remain logged on to RefWorks and continue to export additional bibliographic citations. 

Academic Search Premier Direct Export Option 1. Conduct a search.
2. Click the "Add folder" icon to the right of any results you want to save.
3. Click the "Folder has items" link at the top of the page.
4. Select the desired items to import
5. Click the "Export" link.
6. Click the radio button in front of "Direct Export to RefWorks"
7. Click Save
8. Log into RefWorks when the new window appears.

If Direct Import doesn't work:
1. Conduct a search.
2. Click the "Add folder" icon to the right of any results you want to save.
3. Click the "Folder has items" link, above the Result List on the right side of the screen.
4. Click the "Save to Disk" link from inside the folder.
5. Click the "Bibliographic Manager" tab.
6. Click the radio button in front of "Save citations in a format that can be uploaded to bibliographic management software."
7. Click "Save".
8. Save the results as a text file (with .txt extension and file type Text File).
9. Log
into RefWorks.
10. Click the "Reference" menu and select "Import."
11. Click the "Import Filter/Data Source" menu and select "EBSCOhost."
12. Click the "Database" menu and select "Academic Search Premier."
13. Click the radio button next to "Import Data from the following Text File."
14. Click the "Browse" button to navigate to and select your text file of saved records.
15. Click the "Import" button.

Alternative Press Index Direct Export Option

1. Conduct a search.

America: History & Life Direct Export Option 1. Conduct a search.
2. Click the "Add folder" icon to the right of any results you want to save.

American Chemical Society Publications (ACS) Direct Export Option Note:  You can only export one record at a time from the the ACS website.
1. Conduct your search.
2.  Select the records you want to export and click Download to Citation Manager.
3. Select RefWorks in the Choose a Citation Manager Format drop-down and click the Download button.
4.  Click the Export to RefWorks button.
5.  Your records should appear in the Last Imported Folder.

Annual Reviews Direct Export Option
  1. Carry out your search and from your list of results, click on the title of the record you wish to transfer to RefWorks. Please note that you can only save one record at a time.
  2. On the detailed record screen, Click on Download to Citation Manager (this appears in the Quick Links list on the right hand side of the screen) and then go to step 4.
  3. Alternatively if you are browsing through the references at the end of a journal article it is possible to add these references to RefWorks. Simply select "Download the bibliography to reference management software" located above the bibliography and go to step 4.
  4. On the next screen that appears, choose Citation for this article and RefWorks format and click on Download chapter metadata.
  5. Log into RefWorks to view your imported references.

Note:  When browsing a volume of Annual Reviews, multiple articles can be exported by placing checkmarks by all desired articles from the same volume and clicking on Download to Citation Manager directly above the list of articles. 

Applied Science & Technology Full Text Direct Export Option 1. Click in the box to the left of desired records to mark them.
2. Click the "Exporting/Citing" button at the left of the screen. 
3. Click on Export to RefWorks, Endnote software
4. Confirm that the marked set of records is selected.
5. Confirm that RefWorks' Direct Export Tool is selected.

1. After you perform your search mark the references you want to import by clicking on the checkbox.
2. In the Send section of the Search Results Page, select which records you want to send.
3. Select Send to: RefWorks. Note:  you have two options with or without Abstracts.
4. Click Send.
5. The references are automatically sent to RefWorks.  If you are not already logged in to RefWorks, you will be prompted
6.  Your records should appear in the Last Imported Folder.

Book Review Digest Direct Export Option 1. Conduct a search.

Books In Print Import Filter Required

1. Select records and click Download.
2. Select Standard Download and click Go.
3. Select ASCII and Full Record as the Record Format and click on Go.
4. Using your browser's Save As function, navigate to the local drive and directory where you want to save the file.  The file will have a .gpb extension.
5. Select Text as the file type.
6. Click Save.
7. Log in to RefWorks.
8. Select References/Import from the toolbar.
9. Select BooksInPrint as the data source and BooksInPrint (ASCII Full Record) as the database.
10. Browse to find the text file you saved to your computer.
11. Click Import.
12. Your records should appear in the Last Imported Folder.

Contemporary Literary Criticism (CLC) Import Filter Required An alternative direct export method exists within the library's Article Linker tool.  When you have located your desired article, click on the "Search for full text" link below the citation.  At the the bottom of the Article Linker results screen you will see a link to "Export Citation to RefWorks."

General Business File Import Filter Required 1. Conduct a search.
2. Mark the records you want to import by clicking the box.
3. Click on "Marked Items List" at the top of the screen.
4. On the "Mark Items List" screen, go to the top of the page and click " E-mail"
5. This will open a new window in which you should type your e-mail
6. Click the box next to "E-Mail format" that says "Plain Text."
7. Click the box next to "Send my marked items as:" that says "Citations."
8. Click the box next to "Bibliographic citation format" that says "Plain text with Bibliographic Tags (Z39.80)."

9. Click "send."
10. When your e-mail citations arrive in your mailbox, open Notepad in a new window, and copy and paste the citations from your e-mail to Notepad.
11. Save your citations in Notepad as a text file
(with extension .txt.) to your computer.
12. Log into RefWorks.
13. Click the "Reference" menu and select "Import."
14. Click the "Import Filter/Data Source" menu and select "Gale InfoTrac Web ."
15. Click the "Database" menu, and select "Gale InfoTrac."
16. Click the radio button next to "Import Data from the following Text File."

GEOBASE Direct Export Option 1. Conduct a search.

GeoRef Direct Export Option

For Direct Export:
1. Mark the references you want to export and click the Save icon.
2. Select Save to RefWorks.
3. Click OK in the upper right area of the page.
4. The export will open RefWorks if it is not already open and automatically import the references.  
5.  Your records should appear in the Last Imported Folder.

To Manually Save and Export Records:
1. Mark the references you want to export and click the Save icon.
2.  Select Save to Disk.
3. Under Save or Export These Records select Marked to export the references you selected.
4. Under Save These Fields select Complete Record.
5. Under Also Save: be sure you have Record number checked and Short Labels selected.
6. Click OK in the upper right area of the page.
7. Select the location where you want to save the file and type the file name.
8. Click Save.|
9. Log in to RefWorks.
10. Select References/Import from the toolbar.
11. Select SilverPlatter WebSPIRS as the data source and select the appropriate database.
12. Browse to find the text file you saved to your computer.
13. Click Import.
14. Your records should appear in the Last Imported Folder.

Google Scholar Direct Export Option

Note:  To configure the direct export to RefWorks, you must configure Google Scholar by clicking on the Scholars Preferences link and selecting RefWorks as your default in the Bibliography Manager area.

1. 
Conduct your search in Google Scholar
2.  Each record displayed will have an Import into RefWorks link.  Clicking on the link will launch the RefWorks login page
3.  Once you log in, you are brought automatically to the Edit view of the reference.  If you do not wish to edit the record, you can navigate to any other area of RefWorks.
4.  Your record is stored in your Last Imported Folder.  

GLBT Life with Full Text Direct Export Option 1. Conduct a search.
2. Click the "Add folder" icon to the right of any results you want to save.
3. Click the "Folder has items" link at the top of the page.
4. Select the desired items to import
5. Click the "Export" link.
6. Click the radio button in front of "Direct Export to RefWorks"
7. Click Save
8. Log into RefWorks when the new window appears.
GPO Direct Export Option For Direct Export:
1. Mark the references you want to export and click the Save icon.
2. Select Save to RefWorks.
3. Click OK in the upper right area of the page.

  1. Conduct your search and mark the records you want to import.

  3. Click on "Citation Tools" within the red "Tools" box. A new window will pop up.
  4. Select Export to third party software: Refworks.

1. Conduct your search and add the records you want to import to your marked list.
2. Click on Marked List.
3. Click on Export.
4. Using your Browser's Save As function, navigate to the local drive and directory where you want to save the file.
5. Select Text as the file type.
6. Click Save.
7. Log in to RefWorks.
8. Select References/Import from the toolbar.
9. Select Ingenta as the data source and select the appropriate database.
10. Browse to find the text file you saved to your computer.
11. Click Import.
12. Your records should appear in the Last Imported Folder.

JSTOR Direct Export Option Direct export:
1. Conduct a search.
2. Check needed citations and click on the "Save Citation(s)" link in light brown at the top of the results list.
3. To save citations, you will be required to log-in or create a new, free MyJSTOR account.
4. Click on the "Saved Citations" link on the top right side of the screen (under your user name) to view your citations.
5. Mark the desired citations and click the "Export article citations" button
6. Click on the link for RefWorks  
7.  Log into RefWorks.

Mental Measurements Yearbook (MMY) Direct Export Option For Direct Export:
1. Mark the references you want to export and click the Save icon.

PubMed Searchable Within RefWorks First method - Search the PubMed From Within RefWorks:
1. Log into RefWorks.
2. Click the Search menu and select "Online Catalog or Database."
3. Click the "Online Database to Search" menu and select "PubMed."

4. Conduct a search. You can do a Quick keyword search or an Advanced search using combinations of Author, Title, Subject (Descriptor) and keywords.
5. Your results will appear in another window.
6 . Mark the records you want to import by clicking the box.
7. Click the "Import" button.

Second method - Import as Text File With Filter:
From PubMed:
1. Conduct a search.
2. Mark the records you want to download by clicking the box.
3. Change the Display drop down menu at the top of the page from "Summary" to "MEDLINE."
4. Click on the Display button. The references will now appear in the MEDLINE tagged format.
5. From the Send to drop down select "Text" and click on the "Send To" button.
6. In the newly opened window, click the "File" menu in your browser and select "Save As."
7. Select the appropriate place on your computer and name the file you are saving.
8. Select Text as the "Save as type" and click "Save."
9. Log into RefWorks
10. Click the "Reference" menu and select "Import."
11. Click the "Import Filter/Data Source" menu and select "NLM PubMed."
12. Click the "Database" menu and select "PubMed."
13. Click the radio button next to "Import Data from the following Text File."
14. Click the "Browse" button to navigate to and select your text file of saved records.
15. Click the "Import" button.
