Points of View Reference Center (POV)
is a database designed for the researcher who is
faced with the challenge of evaluating the issues of
yesterday, today, and tomorrow. In a single
interface,
Points of View provides a
balanced series of articles representing multiple
viewpoints, to help readers understand the full
scope of a wide range of controversial subjects.
Students can use this resource as a guide to debate,
developing arguments, writing position papers, and
for development of critical thinking skills.
Points of View provides full-text content
pertaining to hundreds of topics, each with an
overview (objective background/description), point
(argument) and counterpoint (opposing argument). For
each topic, POV also offers a Guide to
Critical Analysis, which helps the reader further
explore the controversial issue by offering
exercises and assignments. The Guide to Critical
Analysis enhances students’ ability to read
critically, develop their own perspective, evaluate
differences between fact and opinion, and write or
debate effective arguments.
Topics covered include: affirmative action,
cloning, DNA profiling, HIV/AIDS status disclosure,
immigration, Iraq, Israel & the Palestinians,
Katrina and FEMA response, nuclear proliferation,
separation of church and state, standardized
testing, stem cell research, tax cuts, voting
machines, and many more.
Points of View contains a balance
of materials from all viewpoints and features 800
main essays as a starting point of reference. Points
of View also includes leading political
magazines from both sides of the aisle, newspapers,
radio & TV news transcripts, primary source
documents and reference books. The database offers
guides pertaining to judging fact from opinion,
