Dorothy Dix Symposium
Symposium Overview
On September 27, 1991, nearly 200 registrants gathered for a day long symposium celebrating the life of Elizabeth Meriwether Gilmer, better known as "Dorothy Dix." The event, which began at 9 a. m. with registration and a continental breakfast in the dining room, was held at Dix's childhood home "Woodstock" in Trenton, Kentucky. Special piano selections were rendered by Anna Laura Page, wife of the President of Austin Peay State University. Introductions were given by Elnor McMahan, APSU, a welcome by Dr. Oscar Page, president, APSU, opening remarks by Arthur Goldsmith Jr., professor emeritus, Woodward Library, APSU, and Inga Filippo, APSU, spoke of the Dorothy Dix Collection in the F. G. Woodward Library.
The symposium was sponsored by Austin Peay State University. Members of the Montgomery County Historical Society and the APSU Women's Club assisted with the event. Elnor McMahan, owner of Woodstock, professor and head, cataloging department, Woodward Library, and Inga Filippo, associate professor and head, circulation department, Woodward Library, were coordinators of the symposium. Partial funding from a Tower Research Grant made the symposium available to participants at a nominal cost.
Six papers were presented by noted scholars, highlighting events from the personal life, world travels and writings of Dorothy Dix during the morning and afternoon sessions. The speakers at these sessions had the opportunity to publish their complete papers in these proceedings.
Other highlights of the day were: a New Orleans style luncheon buffet with entertainment, tours of Woodstock, the antebellum mansion where the author spent her childhood, a pre-play reception, and an evening performance of an original play based on writings of Dorothy Dix. At the end of the day, a plaque was placed and unveiled on the lawn of Woodstock commemorating the symposium.
