She started writing for the Sunday issue of the paper “articles about men and women and husbands and wives and love and children,” she said. At this time Ms. Gilmer adopted the pseudonym “Dix” in memory of “Mr. Dicks,” a Negro who had once helped her family. Dorothy she selected for alliterative purposes.

This article is coupled with drawings of two beautifully dressed ladies with the caption: “Don’t you know that young Mr. Early is too fresh altogether?”—“No, not altogether; his jokes are stale enough.”
