Getting Started with the Makerspace
Woodward Library's Makerspace is open to all faculty, staff, students, and community members. The makerspace contains 3d printers, sticker makers, sublimation and plotter printers, sewing machines, and much, much more!
What is the makerspace?
A makerspace is a collaborative, hands-on environment that provides tools, materials, and guidance for people to explore ideas, learn new skills, and bring their creative projects to life. It's designed to support do-it-yourself (DIY) projects in technology, crafts, engineering, art, and more. It's a space where innovation, experimentation, and curiosity are encouraged—no matter your age or experience level.
What is a maker?
A maker is anyone who:
- Embraces Curiosity: If you've ever thought, "How does this work?" you've got a maker mindset.
- Values Creativity: Makers love to imagine and design original solutions or artistic expressions.
- Collaborates and Shares: They welcome feedback, exchange knowledge, and help others grow.
- Enjoys Problem-Solving: Makers see a challenge as an opportunity to learn something new.
Why be a maker?
Engaging in maker activities, in a makerspace or beyond, has many benefits to both the maker and their community!
Hands-On Learning: Making transforms theoretical concepts into tangible experiences, solidifying understanding and building confidence.
Empowerment and Agency: Using tools to create fosters a sense of ownership and pride in what you produce - whether it's a piece of art or a tech prototype.
Innovation Culture: Makers who collaborate often drive bigger breakthroughs. Encouraging free exploration can lead to entirely new products, research, or methodologies.
Personal Growth and Professional Preparation: Makers develop valuable skills, like communication, project management, and critical thinking, that translate well in both academic and professional settings.
Community Building:Working side-by-side with other members of your community forges friendships and professional connections that extend beyond the makerspace.
What does it cost and what do I get?
Students from any discipline can access the makerspace for free. Some materials are donated and offered without cost, while others, such as 3d printing filament, can be purchased within the makerspace or purchased elsewhere and brought in to be used within the makerspace at the user's discretion.
Community members are welcome in the makerspace. If community members wish to make use of the machines and resources of the makerspace, they are asked to pay a $5 per month for a whole-family membership for use of the space (supplies not included).
How do I begin?
Now that you know what the makerspace is, you're ready to dive in! Everyone who uses the makerspace must read and agree to our waiver before using the makerspace. Once you have completed the waiver and turned it in to makerspace staff, you are free to utilize the makerspace! Come and ask us what you can do, or reach out for information about a project you already have in mind. We're here to help you accomplish your goals!
